Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl: Lenten Program

40 years ago, Catholics in the U.S. wanted a way to respond to famine in Africa. They responded through Lenten prayers, fasting and almsgiving all in the form of a small cardboard box. Today, CRS Rice Bowl helps our brothers and sisters in need worldwide during this Lenten faith-in-action program.

Students are introduced to Catholic social teachings through activities of global solidarity. They receive a “rice bowl” and weekly stories, prayers, and alms giving opportunities reflecting Lenten disciplines. They also receive food recipes from around the world. Many of the activities are sourced online.

This is also a local mission appeal as 25% of the funds collected for CRS Rice Bowl remain in this archdiocese to aid programs focused on food security and hunger relief.  Recipients have included Catholic Charities Dorothy Day Center, Opportunity Center, and Northside Child Development Center. This is a wonderful program for families and faith communities to bring Lent to life.  Program runs during Lent.
